humility + hospitality + integrity + generosity + compassion

As the people of St John’s, we envisage a community of faith in Central (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) that always seeks to follow Jesus. We dream of a church community that draws people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages and ages together to honour God in regular worship. We strive to live with integrity – to live the learning – to build healing community, and to serve the city in which we live.

Sunday Worship

At the centre of our community life are our meetings for worship on a Sunday. We have a variety of worship services which seek to cater for a variety of needs. We hope that everyone will find a place to connect with God in worship on a Sunday. We believe that God can change us in worship. Sometimes that happens in a special moment, but mostly God works gently with us – through a commitment to regular worship…

Sunday Services:

08:00 Worship and Communion

09:45 More traditional English worship, led by an organ and a choir

11:30 Traditional Worship in Xhosa, English and other languages, including the Siyakudumisa and other traditional liturgy

18:00 Contemporary Evening worship, led by a band

Midweek Wednesdays:

17:30 SERVICE OF LIGHT & HOPE: a gentle and reflective service of prayer and Communion

Thinking of visiting?

Visitors are always welcome at our services and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of worship, including taking Holy Communion (if that happens to be part of the service on that particular Sunday).

The Story of the St John’s Cross

The pattern of inter-linked circles appears in the architecture of our church. We are not aware of the historical significance of the pattern, other than perhaps a feature of architecture of the time. But for us the pattern has taken on important significance. The pattern represents 5 over-lapping circles which each represent the five core values of our community. We are convinced that values are more important than vision – that the WAY we choose to do things and say things will be as important (if not more) as any goal or destination. For us, the end never justifies the means. As we seek to honour God, follow Jesus, live with integrity, build community or serve the city, we are convinced that the end is the means.
